Rising Stars is a 24-issue comic book limited series by J. Michael Straczynski about 113 people (called "Specials"). They are born with special abilities following a mysterious mass of energy from an unknown, but non-terrestrial source striking the small town of Pederson, Illinois. The comic explores how a society may react to the introduction of superpowers, and how those Specials may react towards society and each other.

Ten years ago a terrible price was paid by the 'Specials' before they realised that fighting amongst themselves was not why they were empowered. They then decided to act as a unit so they can help humanity.

In the ten years that have since passed they have almost completed this mission. Humanity had been helped by the Specials, and more importantly, had been given the confidence and resources to further help themselves.

A Special, Randy Fisk wins the US Presidency but perceives the remaining Specials as a threat to his power and plots to assassinate the remaining few.

A bomb, specifically designed to destroy even the most powerful Special, is set off during a gathering of all the Specials with profound repercussions for the Specials and the world's population.
